How to Use

After cleansing, swipe a Toning Pad across face. Follow with serums for optimal absorption. Start by using every other day for two weeks. Gradually increase frequency to daily, then up to twice daily (in AM and PM) as tolerated.  We recommend doing a patch test before first use.

What’s the difference between Toning Pads and Toning Pads II?

Both our Toning Pads and Toning Pads II are designed to exfoliate, smooth, and brighten the skin. The key difference comes down to strength and skin tolerance.

Toning Pads:

  • Up to 2% glycolic acid
  • Best for sensitive skin or those new to exfoliating acids
  • Provides gentle exfoliation to clear pores and improve skin texture

Toning Pads II:

  • Up to 5% glycolic acid
  • Better suited for experienced users or those with oily, resilient skin
  • Helps improve stubborn congestion and more noticeable texture concerns

*Both pads contain up to 2% Salicylic Acid

If you’re new to Barefaced pads, start with Toning Pads to let your skin adjust before moving up to Toning Pads II. Always use sunscreen daily when incorporating exfoliating acids into your routine.
Should I start with Toning Pads or Toning Pads II?

We recommend starting with regular Toning Pads and then increasing to Toning Pads II as tolerated.
Can I use Toning Pads with retinoids?

Yes, Toning Pads are totally fine to use together with retinoids (like RetinAL Skin Therapy) but they can be irritating at first. If you’re new to the combo, or struggle with sensitivity, we recommend using the Toning Pads in the AM only and your retinoid at night. You can start using Toning Pads in the PM once you know your skin is tolerating them without dryness or sensitivity in the morning.
How long will Toning Pads last?

Our Toning Pads (II) jars include 60 pads per jar, which typically lasts 1–2 months depending on frequency of use.
How do I incorporate multiple Barefaced skincare pads?

Polishing Pads can be used 1-2 nights a week on the face and they can be used daily on the body. The Polishing Pads do not replace the daily use of Toning Pads/II, but on the day you use a Polishing Pad you will skip the use of Toning Pads/II.
Is this product considered pregnancy or nursing-friendly?

Can you use other actives after these pads? For example, can I use a mandelic acid serum afterwards?
Hi Rachel! Thank you for your question! The short answer is yes! You can use other actives after using our Toning Pads, but only if your skin can handle it. Most individuals will be better off alternating. Start slow and always listen to your skin, before using both products daily and together. Please reach out to us if you have any other questions!
Is some peeling expected in the first few days of using the Toning Pads? Or should I discontinue use?
Hi Bridget! Please keep in mind these are medical grade products and due to the high level of active ingredients in the product, there is an adjustment period to be expected when introducing them. During this adjustment period, increased breakouts, dryness, redness, sensitivity, mild stinging/tingling may be anticipated and should resolve within about 8 weeks. To minimize the anticipated reactions during the adjustment phase, we recommend that you gradually introduce new products into your routine by using them 3x/week on alternating days to begin with. Will toning pads help with pore size reduction and blackheads/clogged pores?
Hi Susan! While there is nothing that can be done to shrink the pore size we do have product recommendations that can help minimize the appearance. The best daily treatment for blackheads are Toning Pads II. The unique combination of acids exfoliate and cleanse the pores of impurities. Daily nighttime use of RetinAL Skin Therapy will increase cellular turnover, preventing build-up in the pores. A few times a week, use Glow Peel Pads in place of Toning Pads II for added exfoliation to loosen dead skin cells and help remove debris from the pores. You might also try the Revision Pore Purifying Clay Mask. You will use this after you cleanse your face and leave on for 15-20 minutes.
