UV damage is aging you—here’s how to stop it

When it comes to skincare, we will shout this from the rooftops: sun protection is the single best investment you can make for your skin. You can buy all the serums, creams, and treatments you want, but if you’re not protecting your skin from UV damage, you’re basically throwing all your time and money away.

It’s such an important topic that Jordan dedicated a whole live show to it. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions during the show and how Jordan answered, ICYMI.

Q: Why is daily sunscreen so important?

Jordan: Up to 90% of visible skin damage (think aging and cancer alike) is caused by the sun. The sun’s UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays damage collagen, elastin, and DNA in skin cells. That damage creates the visible signs we associate with aging: fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, loss of firmness. It’s not just “getting older,” it’s UV damage. And the second key takeaway, UV exposure is also the #1 (preventable) cause of skin cancer.

Furthermore, UV damage is cumulative. That means every bit of unprotected exposure, every “base tan,” and definitely every sun burn adds up over time. UV rays are also coming through your windows in the car and at home so make sure you apply SPF on your face, neck, chest, and the backs of your hands. (Really on any exposed skin!)

It’s never too late to start caring for and prioritizing protection of your skin. You can still have the best looking skin possible no matter your age.

Q: How much sunscreen should I use?

Jordan: I’m a visual learner so think two finger-lengths worth for adequate coverage of your face, neck, and chest. And yes, you really do need to reapply every 2 hours if you’re outdoors, sweating, or swimming, or any time you wipe clean with a towel.

Using this amount will not ruin your vitamin D intake. If that is something you’re worried about, definitely supplement or get your vitamin D exposure extremely early in the morning or at dusk when the UV index is low.

Q: Do I still need sunscreen if my makeup has SPF in it?

Jordan: YES. You should see the amount of makeup you would have to apply to get the proper SPF coverage, it’s like 20 pumps! Makeup with SPF is like having sprinkles on your ice cream. Fun, but not the main event. Use a dedicated sunscreen first, then think of your SPF makeup as a little bonus.

Q: SPF 30 or SPF 50…what should I be using?

Jordan: SPF 30 is the minimum you should reach for every day, and SPF 50 is my personal go-to. Especially in summer or if you’re targeting the prevention of pigmentation. I say go higher when you can.

Q: Mineral vs. chemical sunscreen—does it matter?

Jordan: Both work! Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) physically block rays, while chemical filters absorb them. It really comes down to your skin type preference. I personally like a hybrid option. I’m not afraid of properly dosed/safe amounts of chemicals in products, and I think a mineral-based option gives you both physical protection and smooth application (the chemical elements help eliminate white cast too).

Oily or acne-prone? You might love a lightweight chemical SPF. Sensitive or rosacea-prone? Mineral might be your best friend. The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually wear every day. It might take some trial and error but keep hunting until you find the right fit.

Q: Difference between Sheer and Tinted SPF?

Jordan: Barefaced Sheer Protection SPF 50+ and Tinted Protection SPF 50+ are both mineral-based, broad-spectrum sunscreens They’re formulated to work for all skin types and skin tones. There are only 2 main differences:

  1. The finish. Thanks to micronized (or reeeeeally thinly sliced) zinc particles, Sheer goes on clear, leaving an invisible, natural look that’s perfect if you want sun protection without any added color. Tinted contains a universal sheer tint that helps lightly even out skin tone and soften redness. It can be worn alone on makeup-free days or layered under foundation as a priming step. If you prefer a “bare skin” feel with no risk of color transfer, Sheer is the way to go. If you like the idea of SPF plus a touch of coverage for a more polished, even-toned look, Tinted is your best bet.

  2. The pigment in Tinted Protection comes from iron oxides, which also provide one extra level of protection against visible light, not just ultra violet.

Q: How does vitamin C help SPF?

Jordan: I always say protection is always easier than correction. Putting on a vitamin C serum, like Liquid Gold, before your SPF basically supercharges your sunscreen. We’re talking up to 11x more effective protection. Vitamin C is packed with antioxidants that fight free radicals (sneaky environmental guys that break down collagen, cause dark spots, and speed up aging). So your sunscreen blocks most of the UV rays, and vitamin C swoops in to handle whatever slips through. A dream team.

That’s why these two products are in the Core 4. They are literally daily staples for ALL skin types. Add in a retinoid for cellular turnover (RetinAL Skin Therapy) and exfoliation (Toning Pads) and you have the foundational routine everyone can benefit from for your healthiest skin possible.

Think of it this way, 80% of your skincare should come from the daily routine, and 20% from bonus office treatments. The other way around would be like going to the dentist twice and year and expecting to have great teeth without brushing and flossing at home. You have to invest in the daily commitment for the results you want.

Once you’ve gotten your skin functioning optimally with these 4 products, then you can add in booster treatments like Brightening Serum (especially if you have stubborn sun spots) and office treatments like lasers.

Q: Why does SPF always make me pill and what can I do about it?

Jordan: The number one culprit for pilling in skincare is SPF!!!!! It’s super common with sunscreen for 3 reasons:

  1. Because zinc just pills. A lot.

  2. Because it’s the last step in your routine and by the time you get there, your skin may already be “maxed out” on product and things aren’t properly getting absorbed.

  3. You aren’t exfoliating properly or frequently enough and dead skin cells are keeping your SPF sitting on the surface.

Here’s how to fix it:

  • Apply skincare from thinnest to thickest texture, and let each one fully absorb before moving to the next. Even as long as 5-10 after your serums fully dry to apply your SPF.

  • Watch your application. Rubbing too aggressively can cause product to ball up, gently spread or use a makeup sponge instead.

  • Exfoliate often to keep product from getting caught on dead skin cells atop the skin.

  • And sometimes…it’s just the sunscreen. If it always pills no matter what you do, it’s probably not the right match for your skin type or your other products.

Final Takeaway:

If you only do one thing for your skin, let it be this…protect it from the sun. SPF every single day with no exceptions. Bonus points for hats and shade when you can. Your future self will thank you, and every other product in your lineup will work better because of it. We are the No Sun Club after all.
