Jordan’s Take: Rating Popular Skincare Trends

If you’ve ever wondered which ones are worth trying and which are total duds, you’re in the right place.

Jordan’s Take: Rating Popular Skincare Trends

What to spend your time and money on & what to skip

Lately it feels like every time I blink, a new skincare trend is blowing up my feed. From bizarre DIY hacks to high-tech facials, the hype is real (and sometimes a little ridiculous). You know I’m all about keeping it honest and cutting through the fluff, so I couldn’t resist chiming in on a few of these. Think of this as our coffee chat where I spill the tea on what’s legit, what’s meh, and what totally makes me raise a skeptical brow. Spoiler: I’m not holding back.

I’ve rounded up some of the most buzzed-about skincare treatments you’ve been asking me about and given each my unfiltered verdict — Obsessed, Meh, or Pass. Yes, I’m that friend who will tell you straight up what’s fab or a flop. Let’s do this!

Microcurrent Devices – MEH

Look, microcurrent devices can work to tone facial muscles and give that lifted, snatched look. But here’s the catch: you have to use them consistently, as in daily. And who has time for that? Unless you’re already a multitasking queen who can zap while making lunches, returning emails, and folding laundry—this one’s likely to end up in your skincare graveyard.

Skin Tightening Treatments – PASS

This is one of the most over-promised categories in aesthetics. Do some of them slightly improve skin quality? Yes. But actually tightening loose skin? Not really. At best, you might get a subtle lift. At worst, you’ll spend thousands for results only you can see. If your goal is real tightening, you’re going to need a surgical option—not a laser.

At-Home Microneedling – PASS

Just… no. A lot of these tools use rollers instead of stamps, which can tear the skin instead of creating clean micro-channels. Not to mention most people don’t properly sanitize them or follow up with the right skincare. The risks outweigh the benefits here, and the results are nowhere near what you’d get from in-office microneedling. Promise me you’ll leave this one to the pros.

Skin Cycling – PASS

This was a clever way to help people ease into active ingredients—and I do think it has value in the beginning. But long term? If you’re only using your retinoid or exfoliants a couple nights a week forever, you’re not going to see real change. The skin loves consistency. Use skin cycling as a stepping stone, not your destination.

Retinoids – OBSESSED

After SPF, retinoids are your ride-or-die for anti-aging. They help smooth texture, boost collagen, fade dark spots—you name it. But the magic is in the frequency. Using a retinoid 5–7 nights a week (without wrecking your barrier) is what gets results. That’s why finding the right formula—one that doesn’t peel your face off—is key. [Read all about how to use them like a pro here.]

Oral Collagen Supplements  – MEH

Could they help? Maybe. The research is mixed, but some high-quality collagen supplements show promising results with long-term use. Just don’t expect miracles overnight—or think it replaces topical skincare. Think of it more as a nice addition, not a core step.

Face Taping – PASS

This one gets a lot of hype on TikTok, but let’s be real—it’s not doing much long-term. Will it give you a little smoothing before an event? Sure. But no amount of tape is going to train your muscles or fix wrinkles permanently. If it makes you feel good short-term, great. Just don’t expect Botox-level results.

Red Light Therapy – OBSESSED (mostly)

Red light therapy is one of the most promising skin tools out there—when used correctly. It boosts ATP production in your cells, increases collagen, and can even help with inflammation. But it takes time, consistency, and correct wavelengths. I’m still figuring out which devices actually deliver, but I’m definitely excited about what’s to come.

Slugging – OBSESSED

For dry or irritated skin, slugging can be a game-changer. You’re essentially locking in hydration by sealing in your other products with an occlusive layer (like petrolatum). A few nights a week is all you need, especially during colder months or after treatments. It’s simple, affordable, and it works.

Facial Massage – MEH

Does it lift your face long-term? Probably not. But facial massage can release muscle tension, boost circulation, and make your skincare routine feel like a spa moment. I’m here for that part. It’s more about self-care than transformation—and that’s still a win in my book.

GLP-1s – OBSESSED

Yes, they’re buzzy—and for good reason. Beyond the obvious metabolic benefits, GLP-1s (like semaglutide and tirzepatide) have impressive anti-inflammatory effects, even at micro-doses. That means potential perks for skin, aging, and overall health. But here’s the thing: these aren’t quick fixes. When used thoughtfully and under medical supervision, they’re a powerful tool. Just don’t fall for the TikTok version—this is science, not a shortcut.

Threads  – PASS

Hard pass. The risks outweigh the rewards—and once they’re in, they’re really hard to get out. The long-term complications just aren’t worth it for the temporary lift. There are safer, more predictable options out there.

Preventative Botox in your 30s & 40s (and Baby Botox) – OBSESSED

This is your wrinkle prevention sweet spot. Collagen and elastin are starting to dip, and repetitive movements are leaving their mark. A little Botox now can save you from deeper lines later. Think of it as wrinkle insurance.

Botox in your 50s+ – STILL OBSESSED

At this point it’s less about prevention and more about correction, but we’re still fans. Botox can soften deeper lines and give a refreshed look when done strategically. You’re not too late—you’re right on time.

Under eye filler – MEH

Tricky area. The skin is thin, the anatomy is delicate, and filler can go wrong fast. Not saying never, but it’s a case-by-case thing. (Watch here for my full personal experience: Insert Filler Videos part 1 and 2)

PRF, PRP, PDGF – OBSESSED

Your body’s own healing factors, concentrated and injected to boost collagen, brighten skin, and improve texture? Sign me up.. It’s natural, regenerative, and plays well with other treatments. Love.

Glow-boosting (in-office) microneedling – OBSESSED

This one delivers. Microneedling helps build collagen and boost radiance with minimal downtime—and when paired with things like PRP or exosomes? Even better. A glow-up I’ll always root for.

Overfilled cheeks and temples – PASS

Too much of a good thing is still too much. Overfilled faces can look puffy, distorted, and not like you. That said—a subtle, well-placed temple fill? Chef’s kiss. It’s about balance, not bulk.

Sculptra – OBSESSED

This one’s a slow burn in the best way. It stimulates your own collagen over time for natural-looking volume and firmness. Perfect for long-game facial rejuvenation. I’m a big fan.

DIY Botox – HARD PASS

Absolutely not. I don’t even inject myself—and I teach this stuff. There’s serious risk involved, especially when you don’t understand the anatomy. Leave it to the pros (please).

Exosomes post-procedure – OBSESSED

Exosomes are like tiny messengers that tell your skin to heal better, faster, and glow harder. Especially after treatments like microneedling or lasers, they’re a game-changer for recovery and results.

Morpheus8 – MEH

Not saying it doesn’t work—but it’s not a one-size-fits-all miracle. Painful, pricey, and inconsistent results depending on the provider. If you go for it, make sure you’re in expert hands.

Gua sha & facial massage tools – MEH

Feels nice. Looks cute on a vanity. But the results are super temporary. It’s more of a self-care ritual than a clinical treatment—and that’s okay! Just don’t expect miracles.

Lymphatic drainage facials – OBSESSED

I love a good depuff. These facials help move stagnant fluid, reduce inflammation, and make you feel instantly refreshed. Add in good technique and skincare? Heaven.

Aesthetic tourism – OBSESSED…with caution

Yes, you can find great providers abroad (and often save money). But you have to do your research. Vet credentials, look at real patient outcomes, and be sure you have a safe follow-up plan.

So there you have it — my honest opinions on today’s trends. At the end of the day, everyone’s skin journey is personal, so keep in mind that this advice isn’t one size fits all, just my overarching gut reaction. If I crushed your favorite trend, hyped one you hate, or didn’t mention one you’re dying to know about…let’s chat! Drop a comment or DM me on social to share your thoughts (I live for this stuff). After all, one of the best parts of skincare is the conversation it sparks and the education that follows.
